by Mrs. Jack (Shirley) Mitchell, Present Prayer Advisor and Former Chairman - Marshall County, Alabama C.W.C.
Progress FOR CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH

My vocation is the most rewarding, exciting and creative vocation our society has to offer.

I hear and read so much about women who feel trapped being JUST a housewife. It seems to me they want to be liberated from a wonderful way of life. On the contrary. I feel liberated to love to the depth of my being, to be creative to the ends of my capacity, and free to be myself.

The focal point of my life is my Creator. He gives me the insight to place my values in the proper perspective. The most wonderful part of my vocation is the opportunity to be a wife. A good marriage doesn't just happen. Much work and effort have to go in it. After seventeen vears of marriage, my husband and I still have a great courtship. If he calls from the office and asks for a date, I promptly get a sitter for the children, put on my finest "glad rags," my cheerful face and off we go to dinner... or just any place together. Or, I might call him at the office and ask if he would take a lady out to dinner. We always have a standing date on our
Wedding anniversary.

Even though my husband works very long, hard hours as a wholesale grocery executive, the time we have together is very special. I always look forward to his coming home from work. If possible, I try to put away my ironing board, sewing machine, etc., and make the house look neat. I bathe, put on fresh clothes, fresh make-up and my most cheerful disposition. I've learned through the years that if I don't have time to do all these things, he prefers that I put on my most cheerful disposition! I have a pot of coffee perking because he likes to relax before dinner with a hot cup of coffee.

My job as a helpmate is very important to me. Being able to encourage my husband, boost his ego, sympathize and understand gives me an opportunity to give of myself. Because of the busy, hectic, pressurized life of a businessman, I feel my husband needs a secure home with love and an understanding wife.

During my early years of marriage, I created my Prince Charming in my mind. When my husband didn't exactly fit into this imaginary mold, I either tried to change him or became frustrated and upset. The wisdom of maturity has revealed to me the fallacy of this thinking. I firmly believe I must love my husband enough to set him free to be himself and accept him as he is. Our home has been blessed with the most precious gift of life: children. Our healthy, intelligent, wonderful daughter, 16, and son, 14, cause our cups to overflow.

The life of a mother is not easy, but it is wonderful. The challenge and responsibility of taking a human life to train, teach and take care of is awesome! But the rewards are great! It has been a happy experience for me to stay home with my children in their formative years. During this time I have been able to instill in them character, good habits and the love of God. There are so many opportunities in the little things of everyday living to create faith, build good character and radiate joy. Nothing is quite so precious as a smile of gratitude, joy or excitement on the face of one's own child. The mothers of our country have the precious raw material in their care to produce healthy, well-adjusted, happy adults of the future.

In my opinion, the mother is the stabilizer of the home, and the home is the foundation of our free America. If we are to have a strong nation, we must have strong homes.

Homemaking is a wonderful part of my occupation. My home is my castle! I enjoy using my creative abilities to decorate it and make my home attractive and liveable. 1 enjoy using my personality to make my home warm, friendly, happy and inviting to my friends and family. I enjoy using my energies to make my house clean and tidy ... I even enjoy the routine, dull, hard tasks because I am doing these tasks for the people I love.

Variety is the spice of life. Therefore, I enjoy making my horizon larger than my home. I enjoy traveling with my husband to interesting places and meeting exciting people. I receive inspiration and fellowship from an outstanding group of women who meet twice a month for prayer. I am able to feel a sense of accomplishment through my work as president of our P.T.A.

My most enjoyable outreach is the opportunity to be involved in the Marshall County, Alabama Christian Women's Club. This wonderful Club has given me a channel to reach people who do not have an answer for life. Working in this Club is very exciting and I have met many, many nice people.

I am 37 years old, but if I could roll time back and be 18 again, I would choose Wife, Mother, Homemaker above all other professions.
