The autumn of one's life could be compared to the autumn season. Start the music of fall, maestro! Step out from the ordinary to the colorful, imaginative, dash, panache, and wonder of the extraordinary season.
Nature puts on a dazzling show during the fall season in my home state, Alabama. God takes His brush and paints the leaves vibrant scarlet, deep purple, sunshine yellow, and glowing orange to make the landscape postcard beautiful. Just as the autumn of the year splashes bright colors everywhere, so does the autumn of one's life.
My childhood friend, Carolyn Miller, from Huntsville, Alabama, believes the quality of life is much more important than years lived. Carolyn completes her five-year role as the national president of Woman's Missionary Union, SBC, next month.
Carolyn and I were friends as we grew up together attending the small Mt. Vernon baptist Church in Boaz, Alabama. After church I ate lunch in her home with her family. After lunch she and I would play Monopoly in the floor of her living room, in front of a roaring fire in the fireplace, while sipping Coca-Cola and eating peanuts. Her house was spacious and warm with love. Sunday evening we would return to church for Baptist Young People's Union.
Forty years later, meeting for lunch, the eye-to-eye contact across the dining table caused past years to vanish like snow under the intense heat of sunshine, as Carolyn and I again felt the closeness of a past, teenage friendship. Carolyn shared with me her travels, ministering to the women of the nineties all around the nation. She has ageless appeal.
"What do you think is the secret of women being fabulous after 50?" I quizzed her.
"Love God, love yourself, love people," she said, smiling. "One must be fabulous inside and out. I like people who are so inwardly fabulous that I don't see their outside appearance. On the other side of the coin, I have met people who are fabulous looking but are shallow on the inside. "I think fabulous women are good listeners and givers. They enjoy a balanced life. Fabulous 50-plus women will be imitators of Christ and also His ambassadors."
Looking at this "fabulous after 50" woman across the table, I knew she was living her own philosophy. As head of a 1.1 million-member organization, she travels around the world, making speeches and attending countless committee meetings and functions while continuing her career as wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. In my opinion, my childhood friend is pristine. She impresses me as a gracious woman who grasps for her own strength through the empowerment of her Lord.
Carolyn and I have been successful as wives, mothers, and homemakers, and now we look forward to broader horizons. Being rich in years is giving us a rich life.
Leaving the restaurant, I knew Carolyn was embracing life with great exuberance. I have no doubt that she will relish it, swallow it, and live it to the fullest, taking no thought of age. Life is a stage, not an age. Putting God in the center of the stage to direct life will be a win-win situation.
